5 days / 4 nights
Kibale National Park, Semuliki National Park, Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve & Lake Albert
Depart from Kampala or Entebbe for a scenic drive to Kibale National Park. Pass through vibrant tea plantations and rural towns like Mubende and Fort Portal, with a stop for lunch en route at a local restaurant in Fort Portal. Check into your lodge. After settling in, head to the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature walk. Spot diverse birdlife (e.g., Great Blue Turaco) and primates like red colobus monkeys, with local guides sharing insights about the community-run conservation project. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and relax under the stars, listening to the sounds of the rainforest.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kanyanchu Visitor Center for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking that starts at 8:00 AM. Join a small group (maximum 8 people) led by expert Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers to track a habituated chimpanzee troop. The trek lasts 2–3 hours through lush forest trails, offering a 95%+ chance of encountering chimps. Spend one hour observing their fascinating behaviors—grooming, playing, or foraging. Return to the lodge for lunch and some downtime.
After lunch, visit a local community near Bigodi for a 2-hour cultural tour. Engage with the Batoro people, learning about their traditions, crafts (e.g., basket weaving), and coexistence with the park’s ecosystem. Purchase handmade souvenirs to support local artisans. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and relaxation.
Rise early for a trip to Toro Semliki Wildlife Reserve, Uganda’s oldest protected area. Enjoy a game drive while spotting wildlife such as buffaloes, shoebills, waterbucks, Uganda kob, forest elephants, and if lucky, leopards or lions. Enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Albert and learn more about its history and the origin of its local name – Mwitanzigye (Locust Killer).
Later in the afternoon, head to Bundibugyo town for lunch and a visit to the local market. Experience the vibrant culture of this border town, known for its rich history and diverse communities. Explore market stalls selling fresh produce, crafts, and local delicacies. Continue to Semuliki National Park for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, explore the famous Sempaya Hot Springs—both the “female” and “male” springs located in the lush Semuliki forest. Learn about their cultural legends and geothermal activity. Try the fun tradition of boiling eggs in the steaming pools. Continue with a scenic drive through Semuliki Valley to the shores of Lake Albert. Enjoy panoramic views where the Semuliki River flows into the lake and take a short walk along the lakeshore to spot fishermen and migratory waterbirds. In the afternoon, return to the forest for a guided birding walk. Semuliki is a birder’s paradise with rare species like the White-crested Hornbill, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, and the Congo Serpent Eagle.
