Semuliki National Park

Uganda's only lowland tropical rainforest — where Central African jungle meets East African savanna.

Discover Semuliki's Untamed Jungle

Semuliki National Park is one of Uganda's most underrated treasures — a 220-square-kilometer lowland tropical rainforest that is a western extension of the vast Ituri Forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This means Semuliki offers wildlife and bird species found nowhere else in East Africa, bringing a taste of Central African jungle to Uganda.

The park is dominated by the Semuliki River, a 160-kilometer-long waterway that meanders along the DRC border, creating beautiful oxbow lakes and swampy habitats. Semuliki's most famous attraction is the Sempaya Hot Springs, where boiling water erupts from the ground — you can even boil eggs in minutes!

For birdwatchers, Semuliki is absolute paradise — hosting over 435 bird species including 39 Guinea-Congo biome species found nowhere else in Uganda. The park also protects several primate species, forest elephants, pygmy hippos, and the incredible Shoebill stork.

Unique Semuliki Experiences

True jungle adventures you won't find elsewhere in Uganda

Sempaya Hot Springs

Semuliki's signature attraction! Two powerful hot springs — the "male" spring (which you can boil eggs in) and the larger "female" spring. Walk through the forest to reach these geothermal wonders surrounded by steam and jungle.

Bird Watching Paradise

Attractions & Activities

Sempaya Hot Springs Trail

A 30-minute guided walk through the forest to reach the boiling hot springs. Watch local guides demonstrate boiling an egg in 10 minutes at the "male" spring, then continue to the larger "female" spring with its steaming pool.

Chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, de Brazza's monkeys, olive baboons, black-and-white colobus, and the nocturnal potto.

Over 300 butterfly species including the spectacular pink-winged swallowtail. Crocodiles, monitor lizards, and numerous snake species inhabit the river.

Best Time to Visit Semuliki

Semuliki can be visited year-round, but the best time is during the drier months: June to August and December to February. Trails are less muddy, and forest walks are more comfortable.

The wet seasons (March-May and September-November) make trails slippery and some areas inaccessible, but this is the best time for bird watching as migratory species arrive and resident birds are in breeding plumage.

Semuliki is hot and humid year-round (20-30°C / 68-86°F). The lowland rainforest location means rain can occur any time — always pack rain gear and expect high humidity.
