Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Where gorillas meet volcanoes — Uganda's smallest park with the most dramatic backdrop.
Discover Mgahinga's Volcanic Majesty
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda's smallest but most dramatically beautiful national park, covering just 33.7 square kilometers at the edge of the Virunga Mountains. Located in southwestern Uganda, the park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park is dominated by three extinct volcanoes — Mount Muhabura (4,127m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m) — creating a stunning backdrop for gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking. Mgahinga is home to one habituated mountain gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, known for its relaxed behavior and cross-border wanderings.
Beyond gorillas, Mgahinga offers Uganda's only golden monkey trekking experience, challenging volcano hikes, and the unique opportunity to stand on the tri-junction of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC at the summit of Mount Sabyinyo.

Best Time to Visit Mgahinga
The best time for gorilla and golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga is during the drier months: June to September and December to February. Trails are less muddy, and hiking on volcanic slopes is more manageable.
The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) offer lush vegetation and lower lodge rates, but expect challenging conditions. Volcano hiking may be restricted during heavy rains.
Mgahinga's high altitude (2,200m-4,127m) means temperatures can be cool, especially at night and early morning. Pack warm layers regardless of the season.
